Spice Islands Flavor Explorer

It’s been a flavorful few months ’round these parts, and Taylor and I are proud to call ourselves official Flavor Explorers. We developed the 12 recipes pictured above using Spice Islands’ fabulous products, and they’ve been posting to the Flavor Explorer blog all quarter, along with some other enticing recipes from Gaby Dalkin of What’s Gaby Cooking.

One lucky winner will receive a set of 15 of our favorite Spice Islands® products, including Vanilla Extract, Cinnamon, Whole Nutmeg, Ground Chipotle, Ground Ginger, Fine Sea Salt, Fennel Seed, Thyme, Sweet Basil, Italian Herb Seasoning Blend, Thai Seasoning Blend, Bay Leaves, Beau Monde Seasoning, Dill, and Poppy Seed. Some of these, such as the Ground Chipotle (featured in the Double Chocolate Chipotle Cookies, above) can be hard to find but so worth it. Others, like the Fine Sea Salt, are pretty much used every day in our kitchen (we use this interchangeably with kosher salt in both cooking and baking). While we love creating our own spice combinations, we find ourselves drawn to the perfect seasoning blends (such as the Italian and Thai blends) for quick weeknight meals. Along with kitchen staples like Cinnamon, Bay Leaves, and Vanilla Extract, this would be a great starter set for someone new to cooking, or quality replacements for those old and dried-out spices you’ve got in your cupboard.

  1. As a spicy food lover, the most commonly-used spice in our house is cayenne! =)

  2. I’m a Marylander, so it should be no surprise that my most-used spice is Old Bay. I could it it on just about anything.

  5. Freshly ground black pepper. Also a big fan of herbes de provence.

  6. my most used savory spice is definitely cumin, while the one I use most in baking is probably a tie between cinnamon and ground ginger. thanks for the fab giveaway!

  7. I use smoked paprika on almost everything I cook.

  13. does black pepper count as a spice? i put it on everything short of ice cream! if not, definitely paprika!

  14. That one is easy, Ground Mustard! I put it in almost everything I make.

  15. Rosemary and garlic and pepper.

  18. most used, hmm…does aardvark habanero sauce count as a spice, haha! our runner up would be lawry’s seasoned pepper.

  45. Not really a spice, but more a of a blend…Tony Chachere’s seasoning. It’s good in pretty much any savory dish!

  46. hmmm. it’s a tossup between garlic salt and cinnamon. savory – definitely garlic salt, and sweet – definitely cinnamon.

  47. After salt, I probably use cumin more than anything else during the winter, and basil all summer!

  48. Definitely cinnamon, and surprisingly, my chipotle!

  50. Thyme! And a thyme/rosemary combo. My favorite.

  51. Pepper all the time. But in the summer I use a lot of basil.

  52. I love using italian blends. I put it on everything from poultry and fish to potatoes and breads.

  53. I think herbes de provence is probably my most-used spice! I do use cinnamon an awful lot, though.

  86. oregano, seems like I’m always adding it to recipes and having to pick it up at the store.

  87. My most used spice is Spice Islands Chipotle Chile. And also the Spice Islands Italian Herbs.

  90. The most used spice in my kitchen is Cumin seeds n Cinnamon powder. What a wonderful list of spices n now my eyes are on that ground Chipotle!
